Cueva de la Iglesia
Cloud Forest, Wild Horses & Mountain Legends
Ruta: De las Nubes
One of Yves favorite hikes in the Sierra Norte, this journey follows old mountain paths between villages and reveals some of the quieter and more unexpected landscapes of the region.
Starting in Cuajimoloyas one of the communities of the Pueblos Mancomunados, we cross the territory of San Miguel del Valle before returning again into the territory of Mancomunados walking from village to village through high pine forests and open meadows .
The trail descends to a peaceful reservoir hidden among the forest one of the special places of this hike. This area is known for frequent encounters with the wild horses that roam the mountains and often come here to drink.
From there, the route continues into La Cueva de la Iglesia — a hidden canyon where steep stone walls, lush vegetation, and a small stream create a surprising green oasis in the middle of the forest. Local stories tell that this secluded place once served as a hideout for thieves in the nineteenth century.
A beautiful hike through forests, hidden waters, village landscapes, and the living stories of the Sierra Norte.
